Chess Camp, Water Quality and Wet Felting: Summer Enrichment for Kids

Summer Enrichment Classes for Kids is a series of fun and educational programs that will get them moving and thinking. Beaufort County Community College offers this opportunity for youth to sample careers, hobbies and skillsets.

Chess Camp (for rising 6th-8th graders)

All skill levels are welcome in this class. Students will learn the fun of chess as a beginner, or join in to improve their game. This traditional pastime involves strategy, concentration and planning. Research shows that playing chess improves critical thinking and academic performance. The class will study the fundamentals of competitive chess and play plenty of games. The class runs from June 25-28 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and costs $50.

Thinking About Water Quality (for rising 6th-8th graders)

Our region is shaped by water. The quality of the water affects our health and happiness. Participants will join BCCC biology instructor Chad Smith to learn how to gage water quality using various scientific tests and techniques. On day one, we will explore the hows and whys of water quality and establish a basic understanding of water chemistry. On day two, we will visit several locations in Goose Creek State Park to properly collect and test water samples. On day three, we will build a spreadsheet to help us asses our findings. Students will leave the class with an understanding of proper collecting procedures, scientific testing, data collection and analysis. All supplies are included. This class runs from June 25-27 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. and costs $55. The classroom part will be in Building 9 on BCCC’s campus.

3-D Modeling and Printing (for rising 7th-12th graders)

3-D printing is the future of manufacturing, and it has many scientific and medical applications, as well. Students will use computer software to create three-dimensional renderings of an object, and then they will employ geometric constraints and extrusions to modify the rendering. Finally, they will set-up and run a 3-D printer to create the object. It sounds complex, but it really is fun when Matthew Lincoln, BCCC’s mechanical engineering technology instructor, leads the way. All supplies are included, and participants will carry home the object they render. This class will take place from 5:30 p.m.-8:00 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays from June 19-28. It costs $50.

Wet Felting Craft Day (for rising 5th-7th graders)

This class is going to get wet as they knead the wool to make a colorful natural “painting”. Participants should wear appropriate clothing, and come prepared to enjoy the creative process that is as old as any other art form. Students will use wool to plan and produce a beautiful felted fabric scene mounted on a branch. The scene can displayed on a wall and will give pleasure for years. They should bring two towels to class for the felting process. All other supplies will be provided. This $30 class will take place from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. on June 20.

Wait Staff Training (for ages 16-18)

A good waiter makes good tips. So this class is helpful for those who are thinking of a career in the restaurant business, or if those who want to make extra money as while earning another degree. Stephen Tubaugh has trained many waiters as a restaurant proprietor, and he is eager to share his expertise. He will spent two nights guiding students to provide polished, friendly and appropriate service. During the third class, students will use BCCC’s culinary lab to cook and serve a meal in proper restaurant style, and then they will enjoy dining together. This class will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from June 11-18 from 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m. It costs $35.
