Sign Language, Substitute Teaching and Notary Classes Starting Soon



Get trained as a substitute teacher, learn to use American Sign Language or polish your problem-solving skills. American Sign Language

This course will cover a variety of topics related to American Sign Language including history, terminology, and how to interpret in different arenas. Students will receive suggested homework each week to review topics covered. At the conclusion of this course, students should have the knowledge and ability to have basic conversation with the deaf community. The class runs on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:00-9:00 p.m. starting May 21.

Substitute Teacher Training

This course prepares individuals to substitute teach in the local county school system. This course provides information on learning expectations, time management, monitoring student interaction and classroom management. The college is offering three sessions throughout the summer, each for $70. The first session starts on May 22 and runs from 5:00-9:00 p.m. A session will start on June 18 and runs from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. The final session of the summer will start on July 23 and runs from 8:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Income Maintenance Caseworker NCFAST (phase 2)

This course is designed to cover a variety of skills associated with the Income Maintenance Caseworker role to determine service eligibility. Specific focus will include proficiency in the utilization of the NCFAST application. Other topics include skills in communication, interviewing, time management, data gathering/compiling and data analysis. This is Phase 2 of a two-phase program. Students must have taken Phase 1: Introduction to Human Services to be eligible for this course. This course costs $185. It will run on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00-9:00 p.m. starting May 23.

Working Smart

Working Smart is a five-module curriculum:self-awareness, self-management, work ethics, communication skills and problem-solving skills. This class prepares prospective job seekers for employment and equips individuals currently in the workforce seeking new opportunities. Individuals who complete the training with receive a program certification. A fee waiver is available for qualifying individuals. The college is offering two sessions. One will start on June 4 and runs on Mondays and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. A second session will start on July 9 at the same times.

Notary Public

This course is required for persons wanting to apply for notary public commissions for the State of North Carolina. Individuals should review the Notary qualifications list on the Secretary of State’s web site located at: http://www.secretary.state.nc.us/notary/ prior to registering for class.Per NC Secretary of State Guidelines, students will have to pass an exam to complete the class requirements. Students can sign up for any of three $70 sessions running from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on June 21, July 12 and August 9.
