A resident of Beaufort County, Steven L. Wilson graduated from Washington High School and then attended N. C. State University, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Afterwards, he worked in a family logging business, from which he recently retired. Through the persuasion of a friend, he enrolled in Bryan Oesterreich's creative writing class, resulting in his writing "The Slave Poet of Chapel Hill," which is published in the October, 2004 edition of Our State magazine.
