The Medical
laboratory plays an important role in delivery of health care, and the
Medical technician is an essential part of the
health care team. Rapid progress in Medical
science has created a great need for qualified laboratory personnel.
This program prepares a student to assume an important responsibility in
detecting, diagnosing, and treating disease while working under the
supervision of registered Medical technologists and pathologists. Employment opportunities
include hospital laboratories, doctors’ office, clinics, public health
agencies, veterinarians’ offices, and industrial, research, and
pharmaceutical laboratories. Career mobility is provided through employment
opportunities and possible transfer to Bachelor of Science programs leading
to higher degrees and certification.
The Medical
laboratory technologist uses
precision instruments such as microscopes and automatic chemical analyzers
to test chemically, biologically, and physically blood, tissue, and fluids
of the human body. Results of such tests are essential in the diagnosis,
treatment, and prognosis of the disease.
The Medical Laboratory Curriculum is
offered through cooperation efforts between Beaufort County Community
College and area hospitals. Students thus receive both academic and
practical experience in the field of laboratory medicine. Students spend
five full semesters and one summer session on campus and one full semester
and summer session at various clinical sites.
