Beaufort County Community College (Beaufort CCC) is preparing students for the future of work by weaving artificial intelligence (AI) into its workforce programs. Starting this fall, AI lessons are being introduced into the heating and air technician program (HVAC I, II, and III) and the construction and building maintenance program (Apartment Maintenance and Electrical Fundamentals).

This initiative makes Beaufort CCC one of the first community colleges in North Carolina to embed AI into short-term workforce training. Over the next two years, the Division of Continuing Education plans to expand AI lessons into all industry training and workforce initiatives.

Preparing Students for Smarter Systems

Today’s technicians are entering a job market where smart technologies and automated systems are the norm. By learning AI applications alongside their trade, Beaufort CCC students gain an edge in a competitive industry.

“AI can not only augment our abilities and professionals but inspire in our students the hope to achieve greater things both using AI as an advanced tool and a way to continually develop their skills to the next level,” said Dr. Justin Rose, director of industry training and workforce initiatives. “We want our students to excel in their trade and be competitive in emerging technology so they can be a leader in their field.”

Practical Applications in the Classroom

The new AI lessons will cover topics such as:

  • AI-assisted fault detection in HVAC systems
  • Predictive maintenance in electrical networks
  • Smart building management technologies

These additions directly reflect industry demand for technicians who can confidently handle both traditional systems and advanced digital tools.

Industry-Recognized Skills

Students in these programs will not only earn Beaufort CCC credentials but also Microsoft badges and trophies, giving them proof of their growing digital skill set.

“This approach keeps our programs current and ensures that our graduates are employable and adaptable,” said Dr. Stacey Gerard, vice president of continuing education. “Employers want workers who can think ahead, and AI knowledge helps them do exactly that.”

A Regional Leader in Innovation

Beyond embedding AI into technical courses, Beaufort CCC also offers introductory workshops such as:

  • AI: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence
  • AI: Google Workspace Resources for Your Workplace
  • Harnessing Canva: Advanced AI Features

By taking this innovative step, Beaufort CCC is ensuring its graduates are not only prepared for today’s jobs but also equipped to thrive in tomorrow’s workplaces.
