Beaufort County Community College is proud to recognize the families who completed the ESL Family Literacy Partnership with Eastern Elementary School. This innovative program brought together English as a Second Language (ESL) parents and their children to participate in shared learning experiences that build phonics, vocabulary, and language skills—learning together as a family.
Each family received three children’s books to encourage reading at home:
- The Very Hungry Caterpillar
- Flat Stanley
- Pete the Cat and the Bad Banana
Dunia Martinez and Rosa de Jesus completed the program with their children, Brianna Izabella Reyes Martinez and Paola Sarai Groover, respectively.
“The pride and excitement were overwhelming—parents hugged us with tears in their eyes, so thankful for this opportunity,” said Penelope Radcliffe, Director of College and Career Readiness. “We are incredibly proud of what we’ve accomplished together, and this is just the beginning.”
Beaufort CCC extends its sincere thanks to Principal Lisa Taylor and Assistant Principal Raul Olivares of Eastern Elementary for their support, and to ESL instructor Pat Waters for making the program both engaging and meaningful for children and adults.
Expanding Family Literacy in Fall 2025
The success of this pilot program has paved the way for expansion in the upcoming fall semester. The ESL Family Literacy Partnership reflects Beaufort CCC’s ongoing commitment to accessible, community-based education that supports whole families.
