Beaufort County Community College celebrated the achievements of 20 students who earned their GED or high school equivalency (HSE) diplomas at a graduation ceremony on June 26. Overall, the program awarded 38 credentials during the year, including through correctional education sites and regional centers.
Students earned their diplomas by passing either the GED or HiSET exam, including participants at Hyde Correctional Institution, Tyrrell Prison Work Farm, and regional centers in Hyde and Washington counties.

Faculty Recognition
Dana Mewes, an English Language Acquisition (ELA) instructor, was named the 2024 EVE Ide Instructor of the Year. She led the college’s first bilingual GED class, and its first graduate, Gricelda Bello Martinez, was among the honorees at the ceremony.
Keynote Inspiration
Graduate Georgia Scherer served as the keynote speaker, sharing how her father’s final wish inspired her to return to school and complete her GED. Her message encouraged others in the audience to persist in their educational journey.

Academic and Workforce Training Combined
Beaufort CCC’s HSE program integrates academic preparation with real-world skills:
- Digital literacy classes, including email and job search training
- Healthcare Integrated Education and Training (IET), which introduces medical careers and helps students prepare for programs such as nurse aide
