BCCC Foundation Awards Spring Scholarships



The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the spring 2019 semester. The BCCC Foundation has awarded over $150,000 in scholarships during the 2018-2019 academic year. Registration is currently open for summer and fall classes.

Jamison Bennett, 18, received the Bunyan Ruritan Club Scholarship. Bennett is working toward an Associate in Science. He is the son of James and Stephanie Bennett, and he attended Southside High School. The Chocowinity resident currently works as a cashier at Dollar Tree and plans to become a social worker.

Established in 1991, scholarships are awarded to students residing in BCCC service area who demonstrate financial need and strong academic promise. Scholarships are awarded annually for fall and spring semesters.

Jessica Chadwick, 29, received the Tayloe Memorial Scholarship. The Winterville resident is a student in the Licensed Practical Nurse program. The daughter of Jesse Chadwick of Winterville, she attended South Central High School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Fayetteville State University. Chadwick currently works at Vidant Medical Center as a certified nurse aide/care partner and plans to work as a public health nurse.

Mrs. Sam Tim (Tay) Carter, with encouragement from her children Libba, Lou, Clay, and Mary, started the Tayloe Family Endowment in 2003, in memory of her grandfather, Dr. David Thomas Tayloe. The endowment also honors his numerous descendants who have made significant contributions to the medical community of Beaufort County. Scholarships generated by this endowment are awarded to BCCC students enrolled in any medically related program.

Hayley Crets, 19, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. Crets is part of the Associate Degree Nursing program. She is the daughter of Tom and Angie Crets, and she attended Northside High School. The Pinetown resident currently works as a certified nurse aide and plans to attend obtain a Bachelor of Science in Nursing to be a labor and delivery nurse.

Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to current or former employees of Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy.

Tony Jordan, 40, received the Barbera LaBarbera Memorial Scholarship. Jordan is the son of Beatrice Jordan of Chowan County. He is part of the Associate Degree in Nursing program, and she attended John Holmes High School. The Chowan resident plans to transfer to East Carolina University, and he currently works at Bertie Martin Regional Jail.

Established by Civitan on the Pamlico in 2015 to memorialize charter member Barbara LaBarbera, the annual scholarship will be awarded to students accepted to the school of nursing who demonstrate academic achievement and financial need. Mrs. LaBarbera was a longtime resident of Beaufort County and passionately and continually showed her concern and care for others in need. Recipients must reside in Beaufort County, have a current GPA of 3.0 or higher, and demonstrate participation in voluntary services meeting individual or community needs.

Evan King, 24, received the Doris Eakes Scholarship. The daughter of Donald and Sheila King of Winterville, she is part of the Associate Degree in Nursing program. King attended Ayden-Grifton High School, plans become a travel registered nurse, and she earned a bachelor’s degree in 2016. She currently works as a cashier at Lowe’s Home Improvement.

Doris Wallace Eakes, originally from Beaufort County, started this endowment to memorialize her father, Carmer Wallace, and her husband Joseph Eakes. Doris and her husband owned numerous nursing homes and shared a passion for good nursing care. Thus, the proceeds from this endowment support nursing scholarships.

Donna Roberson, 49, received the Myrtle Cutler Jones Scholarship. Roberson is working toward an Associate in Arts. She is the daughter of Mac Roberson and Ethel Overbee of Williamston, a mother of three, and she attended Williamston High School. She currently works at Lake Phelps Grain as a grain merchandiser and plans to attend obtain bachelor’s and master’s degrees to be a counselor for victims of abuse.

Established in 2002 by the family of Myrtle Cutler Jones, this fund provides an annual scholarship to a second year BCCC student in a medical technology program. Jones, a Beaufort County native, recognized the importance of a medical facility in a rural community. She wanted her estate to benefit students in the medical field. Recipients must have at least a 3.0 GPA.

Brooke Thomas, 21, received the Washington Rotary Club Scholarship. The New Bern resident is part of the nursing program and plans to get a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. The daughter of David and Lisa Hawkins of New Bern, and wife of Caleb Thomas, she attended West Craven High School.

Established in 1994, Washington Noon Rotary Scholarships are awarded annually to BCCC students who have academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students who have a tie to the Rotary organization and exhibit service to the community.

Brianna Waters, 20, received the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship. Waters is part of the business administration program. The daughter of Ronnie and Christie Waters, the Plymouth resident hopes to transfer to East Carolina University. Waters attended Roch Academy and currently works at McDonalds.

Scholarships are awarded to students who best exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, “People Helping People,” and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Preference is given to students whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees who live and work in North Carolina. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 of higher and be enrolled in an associate degree, diploma or certificate program.
