Students receive Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical & other scholarships



The Beaufort County Community College Foundation is proud to announce the following scholarship recipients for the spring 2020 semester. The BCCC Foundation has awarded over $180,000 in scholarships during the 2019-2020 academic year. Students can apply now for summer or fall 2020 scholarships online and apply for admission or register online for classes.

Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarships are awarded annually to students pursuing a career in the medical field. Qualifying students will have a 2.5 GPA or greater and must be a resident of Beaufort, Hyde, Martin, Tyrrell or Washington County. Student must demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to former employees of Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy.

Kelsey Alligood, 22, received the David Lee Jr. Scholarship. She is a Washington resident and a business administration student. She attended Washington High School and plans to work in property management. She is the daughter of Clyde and Ione Alligood of Washington.

Established in 2007, two David Lee Jr. Scholarships are provided annually to assist students during the fall and spring semesters. One student will be selected from the automotive program and second student from the business program. Students must have and maintain a 2.5 GPA and must not receive any other financial assistance.

Shelia Edwards, 48, received the Bunyan Ruritan and the Louise R. Lester Foundation scholarships. She is working on an Associate in General Education. Edwards attended Chocowinity High School, holds an AAS in Administrative Office Technology and plans to work as an elementary teacher. She is the wife of John Edwards, a mother of two, and the daughter of the late William Delma and Annie Ruth Hill. She works as a teaching assistant for Beaufort County Schools.

Established in 1991, Bunyan Ruritan Scholarships are awarded to students residing in BCCC service area who demonstrate financial need and strong academic promise. Scholarships are awarded annually for fall and spring semesters.

Founded in 2001, the Louse R. Lester Foundation builds on the charitable works of Mrs. Louise Robertson Lester. Mrs. Lester was a native of Martinsville, Va., and attended Bentley Business College, Gassaway Business College, and, later in life, Patrick Henry Community College and Averett College. She was an accomplished artist, producing beautiful paintings and poetry. The Louise R. Lester Foundation seeks to effect positive change in the communities and lives of the people who are served through its philanthropic support. They seek to build effective relationships with grantees through a willingness to understand the challenges they face. Scholarships are available for students facing financial challenges to continue their college education.

Harrison Gurganus, 19, received the State Employees Credit Union Scholarship. He is a Pinetown resident working toward an Associate in Applied Science in Welding Technology. He attended Northside High School. The son of Jeffery and Lori Gurganus of Pinetown, he plans to work as a welder. Gurganus currently works in the produce department of Food Lion.

SECU Scholarships are awarded to students who best exemplify the membership philosophy of credit unions, “People Helping People,” and have demonstrated leadership, excellence of character, integrity, and community involvement. Preference will be given to students whose parents or guardians and family members are public sector employees who live and work in North Carolina. Students must have a GPA of 2.5 of higher and be enrolled in an associate degree, diploma or certificate program.

Kaitlyn Hall, 19, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. She is a Williamston resident and a nursing student. Hall attended Bear Grass Charter School. She is the daughter of Rick and Beth Hall of Williamston.

Evelyn Cuevas Rodriguez, 20, received the Beaufort County Crimestoppers Linley H. Gibbs, Jr. Scholarship. She is a New Bern resident working toward her Associate in Applied Science in Criminal Justice Technology. She attended Columbia Early College High School. She currently works at First Flight Federal Credit Union. The mother of one is the wife of Alan Negrete, and she is the daughter of Luis Cuevas Hinojosa and Adriana Rodriguez Juarez of Creswell. She plans to become a paralegal.

The Beaufort County Crimestoppers Linley H. Gibbs, Jr. Scholarship commemorates the memory of founding and long-term member Linley Gibbs by providing a scholarship to excelling individuals that exemplify the same corresponding morals and principals. To honor Mr. Gibbs’ legacy, Beaufort County Crimestoppers provides scholarships to students continuing their success in a law enforcement career.

Roxanne Tate, 33, received the Washington Rotary Club Scholarship. She is a Washington resident working toward an Associate in Arts. She earned a GED from BCCC. She plans to work at BCCC. She is a mother of one and the daughter of Shirley Tate.

Established in 1994, Washington Rotary Club Scholarships are awarded annually to BCCC students who have academic promise and demonstrate financial need. Preference is given to students who have a tie to the Rotary organization and exhibit service to the community.

Lori Dixon Toler, 34, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical Scholarship. She is a Vanceboro resident and a medical coding and billing student. Toler attended Washington High School, and holds a BS in Psychology. She works at Precision Eye Care as a certified ophthalmic assistant. The mother of two is the wife of Macon Toler and the daughter of Donald Dixon of Washington and Kathy Parkhurst of Lawton, Ok.

Nikita Whitehurst, 45, received the Tayloe’s Hospital Pharmacy Medical and the Washington Rotary Club scholarships. She is a Winterville resident and a pre-nursing student. She currently works at the North Carolina State Veterans Home of Kinston as a licensed practical nurse. She attended J.H. Rose High School and plans to work as a family nurse practitioner.
