Beaufort County Community College (Beaufort CCC) recognized outstanding student leaders during its Academic Awards Ceremony on April 14, celebrating individuals whose perseverance, leadership, and service exemplify the mission of North Carolina’s community colleges.

Two exceptional students—Ashley Lowe and Trevon Barrett-Little—were nominated for top honors from the North Carolina Community College System: the Dallas Herring Achievement Award and the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award.

Ashley Lowe Nominated for Dallas Herring Achievement Award

Ashley Lowe, a Human Services student and mother, is Beaufort CCC’s nominee for the Dallas Herring Achievement Award. She earned her GED through Beaufort CCC in just five months, motivated by a deep desire to build a better life for her children.

Overcoming the trauma of surviving human trafficking, Ashley became an outspoken advocate for fellow survivors and a passionate supporter of educational access. Her goal is to support children who have experienced trauma, work that reflects the compassion and resilience championed by Dr. Dallas Herring.

Established in 2010, the Dallas Herring Achievement Award honors current or former students who embody Dr. Herring’s mission of “taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go.”

Trevon Barrett-Little Nominated for Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award

Trevon Barrett-Little, a criminal justice student, is Beaufort CCC’s nominee for the Governor Robert W. Scott Student Leadership Award. As president of the Men of Success mentoring program and a Student Ambassador, Trevon has earned a reputation for leadership grounded in empathy, inclusivity, and vision.

He returned to Beaufort CCC to pursue a career change in criminal justice and law. On campus, he champions mental health awareness, advocates for underrepresented students, and works closely with college leadership. He is a member of the Gamma Beta Phi Honor Society and a scholar in the TRIO/Student Support Services program.

The Scott Award recognizes curriculum students who demonstrate exemplary leadership and service. It was established in 2004 to honor former Governor Bob Scott, who served as both governor and president of the North Carolina Community College System.
