Students attending Beaufort County Community College who receive aid through the BCCC Foundation had the opportunity to dine with their benefactors on March 19. The Legacy Luncheon brought together future nurses, medical lab technicians, business owners, welders, and nail technicians, along with the donors who fund their scholarships. The BCCC Foundation awarded over $160,000 in scholarships this academic year.
Speakers at this year’s event included BCCC President Dr. Dave Loope; history instructor Bill Ziegler; associate degree nursing student Nick Peele; pre-nursing student Lavikina Grimes; mechanical engineering technology student Brandon Hernandez-Espinoza; and associate degree nursing student Mallory Hudson.
The BCCC Foundation is a non-profit charitable organization established in 1984 to provide community-based support for the college in achieving its educational and workforce development goals. Through the foundation, generous donors provide funding for scholarships, institutional programs, faculty and staff development, and facility improvements.
While the Beaufort Promise now covers tuition and fees for most students—both in college credit and short-term credential programs—the BCCC Foundation plays a vital role in covering the cost of textbooks and additional fees that can otherwise stand between students and their education.
New scholarships continue to be added as community members partner with the Foundation to create opportunities. Three new scholarships introduced this year include:
- The Allen & Harris Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2024 in memory of the Allen and Harris families, the Allen & Harris Memorial Scholarship endowment supports curriculum, nontraditional nursing students with demonstrated financial need. Eligible students must have a completed FAFSA on file and submit the Foundation General Scholarship Application each semester. Awards are applied to studies at Beaufort County Community College. - The Lynda E. Lane Scholarship
Created in 2023, the Lynda E. Lane Scholarship encourages participation in the visual and performing arts, which have been linked to cognitive, social, and behavioral benefits. The scholarship supports students enrolled in arts programs and may be used for supplies, materials, technology, tuition, fees, and books. - The Robert “Bobby” Hodges Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2024 in loving memory of Mr. Robert “Bobby” Hodges, the Robert “Bobby” Hodges Memorial Scholarship endowment supports BCCC students enrolled in either nursing or business programs. Curriculum students must be enrolled in licensed practical nursing or associate degree nursing programs, while continuing education students must be enrolled as a Nurse Aide or Registered Medical Assistant. Students must reside in the BCCC service area, have a minimum 2.0 GPA, and demonstrate financial need. Awards are given per semester and may be used for tuition or textbooks.
The Foundation’s activities are overseen by a 24-member board of directors comprised of civic and business leaders from BCCC’s four-county service area. The BCCC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all contributions are tax-deductible. The Legacy Luncheon was sponsored for the tenth consecutive year by Rod Cantrell, financial advisor at Edward Jones.
The BCCC Foundation will host its 31st Annual Scholarship Fundraiser Golf Tournament on May 2.
