Transfer Pathways

The following degree programs are appropriate for students who plan to transfer to a four-year college or university.

Associate in Arts (AA)

The Associate in Arts degree can be thought of as the first two years of coursework toward a Bachelor of Arts degree. It is appropriate for students who wish to transfer to four-year schools to become lawyers, teachers, social workers, historians, journalists, artists, and professionals in a number of other areas. 

The Associate in Arts degree consists of 60 semester hours of credit in college transfer / general education courses. These courses are approved for transfer to all public universities within the University of North Carolina system. Community college graduates must earn a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer to a university with a junior status.

Associate in Science (AS)

The Associate in Science degree can be thought of as the first two years of coursework toward a Bachelor of Science degree. It is appropriate for students who wish to transfer to four-year schools to become scientists, engineers, doctors, pharmacists, and professionals in a number of other STEM-related areas. 

The Associate in Science degree consists of 60 semester hours of credit in college transfer / general education courses. These courses are approved for transfer to all public universities within the University of North Carolina system. Community college graduates must earn a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer to a university with a junior status.

Associate in Arts – Teacher Preparation (AATP)

The Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation degree can be thought of as the first two years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in education / teaching. It is appropriate for students who wish to transfer to four-year schools to become teachers in language arts, social studies, and other non-STEM subject areas. 

The Associate in Arts in Teacher Preparation degree consists of 60 semester hours of credit in college transfer / general education courses. These courses are approved for transfer to all public universities within the University of North Carolina system. Community college graduates must earn a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer to a university with a junior status.

Associate in Science – Teacher Preparation (ASTP)

The Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation degree can be thought of as the first two years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in education / teaching. It is appropriate for students who wish to transfer to four-year schools to become teachers in science, math, and other STEM-related subject areas. 

The Associate in Science in Teacher Preparation degree consists of 60 semester hours of credit in college transfer / general education courses. These courses are approved for transfer to all public universities within the University of North Carolina system. Community college graduates must earn a grade of “C” or better in each course and an overall GPA of at least 2.7 on a 4.0 scale in order to transfer to a university with a junior status.

Associate in Applied Science – Early Childhood Education

The Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education degrees can be thought of as the first two years of coursework toward a bachelor’s degree in early childhood / Birth to Kindergarten education. They are appropriate for students who wish to transfer to four-year schools to work in child development and childcare programs, preschools, public and private schools, recreational centers, Head Start programs, and school age programs. They are also appropriate for students who wish to become Kindergarten, Pre-K, and Head Start teachers and teacher assistants.

At BCCC, the Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education program is offered in two degree pathways: Licensure and Non-Licensure.

Associate in Applied Science – Early Childhood Education – Birth to K Licensure

The Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education in Birth to Kindergarten (licensure) degree prepares students to work with children from birth through eight in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers.

Upon completion, students transfer to a four-year institution in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in birth through kindergarten education and an NC Birth-Kindergarten Teaching License.

Associate in Applied Science – Early Childhood Education – Non-Licensure

The Associate in Applied Science in Early Childhood Education (non-licensure) degree prepares students to work with children from birth through eight in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers.

Upon completion, students transfer to a four-year institution in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, child development, or a related field.

Non-Transfer Pathways

The following degree programs are appropriate for students who plan to enter the workforce immediately after graduation from BCCC instead of transferring to a four-year college or university.

Associate in General Education (AGE)

The Associate in General Education degree is designed for the academic enrichment of students who wish to broaden their education. Emphasis is placed on personal interest, growth, and development. This degree is not designed for students who plan to transfer to another college or university. Course work includes study in the areas of humanities and fine arts, social and behavioral sciences, natural sciences and mathematics, and English composition.

Community Spanish Interpreter Certificate

The Community Spanish Interpreter certificate prepares individuals to work as entry-level bilingual professionals who will provide communication access in interview and interactive settings. In addition, the program curriculum provides educational training for working professionals who want to acquire Spanish language skills. Graduates should qualify for entry-level jobs as para-professional bilingual employees in educational systems or a variety of community settings.

Diploma – Early Childhood Education – Career Entry

The Diploma in Early Childhood Education is designed for students who plan to enter the workforce immediately after graduation from BCCC. It prepares students to work with children from birth through eight in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories with practice in actual settings with young children under the supervision of qualified teachers.

The Early Childhood Diploma prepares individuals to work in licensed childcare settings, regulated home day care settings, child development centers, church play schools, after-school settings, camps, and recreational centers. Diploma graduates will have the necessary credentials to be an administrator/director in a childcare setting.

All courses in this diploma program may be applied toward completion of the Associate of Applied Science degree in Early Childhood Education.

Certificates in Early Childhood Education

Early Childhood Education – General Certificate

The Early Childhood Education curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from birth through eight in diverse learning environments. This program prepares individuals to work entry-level employment in licensed childcare centers, regulated home daycare settings, child development centers, church preschools, camps, and recreational centers.

This curriculum prepares individuals pursuing administrative roles in diverse childcare settings to effectively work with children, families, and teachers. The certificate is composed of learning opportunities in developmental theories, competency and evidence-based professional knowledge, administrative skills, and leadership qualities.

The curriculum prepares individuals to work with children from infancy to three years of age in diverse learning environments. Students will combine learned theories, competency-based knowledge, and practice in actual settings with infants and toddlers.
