Kids & teens can take a free Summer Enrichment class at the Washington County Center in Roper

This summer, Beaufort County Community College will offer in-person Summer Enrichment Programs for Kids and Teens at the Washington County Center. The classes offer a variety of experiences— including drones and detective work— for youth of varying ages. To make the programs accessible to more families, BCCC will offer one free class to every child. Parents will need to apply for a scholarship to take advantage of this offer. Parents and guardians can call 252-940-6375 or email continuingeducation@beaufortccc.edu to find out more. All classes will take place at the Washington County Center in Roper unless noted otherwise.

3-D Modeling and Printing

3-D Printing has many manufacturing, scientific, and medical applications. At the Washington County Center, rising 6th graders and up will set up a design and manufacturing lab complete with two 3-D printers. Students will then use computers to create three dimensional renderings of an object. They will employ geometric constraints and extrusions to complete the plan. Finally, they will set up and run a 3-D printer to create that object. It sounds so complex, but it is really fun, and students will carry home the object they design and create. All supplies included. This class will take place from 9:00 a.m.-noon from June 21-June 24 and costs $90.

Drone Camp

Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th graders can learn to fly a drone! They will be issued a drone kit and learn about the parts of a drone and how to safely handle it. They will learn about aviation history, and how hot air balloons, fixed wing airplanes and drones fly. Finally, they will fly a drone using a smartphone as the remote controller and learn how to code the drone to fly by itself. The class will spend four days at Washington County Middle School and use their gym for drone flying inside. Weather permitting, they will also fly outside. On Friday, the class will take a field trip to Inner Banks STEM Center in Washington, N.C. to experience flying both a Desktop Flight Training Device and a full motion airplane flight simulator, and other cool activities. This class is made possible by the Inner Banks Stem Center and will take place from 9:00 a.m.-noon from July 12 - July 15 and costs $90.

Google Game Design

Rising 3rd graders to rising 5th graders can learn how to program various types of digital games using the Google Computer Science First® and Scratch® interfaces. Game styles include racing, mazes, platform, strategy, and others. In this fun and interactive class, students will learn how games like Super Mario, Angry Birds, Candy Crush, and Flappy Bird were created. It will run from 9:00 am-noon at Washington County Middle School from July 12 - July 15 and costs $70.

CSI: Roper

A crime has been committed. The scene is waiting for rising 5th grader to rising 8th grader detectives to investigate, gather evidence, record observations, and help solve the case. Investigators from the BCCC Police Office will help the class. Students will learn the scientific methods of investigation and interrogation. They will test for prints, blood, and other evidence, properly manage the crime scene, and assemble the evidence for presentation. They will bring the perpetrator to justice, and they will have fun in the process. This $45 class will run form 9:00 a.m.-noon on July 12-13.
