AVIATION PATHWAY COURSES FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS (AGES 16+)
OVERVIEW & DESCRIPTION
In partnership with the Inner Banks STEM Center (IBX STEM) and Dillon's Aviation, Beaufort County Community College is offering a High School Aviation Academy to Beaufort County students (public, private, and homeschool) ages 16+ with the first session starting the September of 2024 and a second session in January 2025.
We are offering two exciting aviation course options:
- Option 1 - A 14-week Private Aircraft Pilot Course consisting of 45 online and 75 in-person hours, for 120 contact hours. Upon successful completion, students will receive a sign-off from one of Dillon's CFIs (Certified Flight Instructors) and will be able to take the FAA Private Pilot Knowledge Exam. If the exam is passed, a students score is valid for two years. Beaufort Co. students attending WHS, SHS, NHS, ECHS, WMPCS, and all private and homeschools are eligible.
- Option 2 - A 13-week UAV Operator course consisting of 45 online hours and 56 in-person hours, for 101 contact hours. After successful completion, students be encouraged to sit for the Part 107 Remote Pilot Exam at a certified testing center. If the exam is passed, a students score is valid for two years. NOTE:: Option 2 is not open to students attending Washington High School or Southside High School. Beaufort Co. students attending NHS, ECHS, WMPCS, and all private and homeschools are eligible. WHS and SHS students are NOT eligible.
Both courses offer a flexible schedule, with self-study online course hours available Monday through Friday each week and hands-on training conducted on Saturdays at the IBX STEM Center next to Washington-Warren Airport in Washington, NC. This approach will allow students to complete their course outside of their regular school hours. In-person Saturday training involves practical sessions with flight training devices, full-motion simulators, or drones. Upon completion of their course, students will receive a 'Certificate of Completion' from the participating online ground school training program, IBX STEM, and BCCC.
COSTS
The course and all materials will be FREE to all students who are selected to participate.
TRANSPORTATION
For students needing transportation to the IBX STEM Center for Saturday classes, options will be provided via Beaufort Area Transit Services (BATS).
